MeMo
Overview
Memphis Modern, a typeface revival
Context
I designed MeMo by reviving the Memphis letterforms from a book of cowboy poetry called Horsefeathers, written by Johnny Ritch in 1940. This project is my first foray into digital type design, and first time using RoboFont and Glyphs. MeMo is still in progress, and it has been a study in contrast: between machine logic and human quirk, between rigid geometry and expressive form. The original metal version was a bold step toward modernism in typography, and its design still resonates with today’s need for clarity, tone, and edge. What began as an exploration of type history turned into a dialogue with the past: learning how early modern designers balanced ideal forms with the constraints of physical type. In the process, I found that reviving a typeface is never just a reproduction, it’s an interpretation, shaped by today’s tools, uses, and aesthetic climate.
