Title
Letterpress
Overview
Letterpress printing is a tactile process of composing type by hand, inking it, and pressing it into paper — where language is physically impressed, not just seen.
Context
I create letterpress prints using hand-set type at the San Francisco Center for the Book, where each piece is composed by hand and printed through a process of inking, impression, and iteration. Working in letterpress allows me to engage with type as both system and object, where language is not only seen, but physically impressed into the page. I’ve used this process to produce posters for Friends & Family staff prior to their Oakland bar closure, as well as 春聯 (Spring Festival couplets) for Lunar New Year I also experiment with color and technique, such as split fountain printing—where multiple inks are blended directly on the press rollers to create a painterly gradient. This method was used in a poster reading “I am a museum of all things I love,” where each print carries slight variations from the inking process.
