Dogs
Overview
Casual dog portraits exploring personality through quick, intuitive color. These are loose, expressive studies that double as small, meaningful gifts.
Context
This ongoing series of quick-study portraits captures the personality of my friends' dogs through rapid, intuitive color exploration. Each portrait is completed in a single 15-minute session, forcing spontaneous mark-making decisions that result in loose, expressive interpretations. The limited time constraint and varied media choices, from office supplies like highlighters to inexpensive markers to traditional colored pencils, create an interesting tension between careful observation and playful experimentation. The series capture essential characteristics and personality through minimal, energetic strokes, while the varying color palettes show versatility in composition and mood. Though created as initially as meditative 'brain reset' exercises, these portraits serve a deeper purpose as gifted pieces of art, transforming quick sketches into meaningful connections with pals who have furry friends. The collection exemplifies how time constraints can enhance rather than limit creativity, resulting in fresh, immediate responses to each pup subject.
